 The commonality of Netflix rom-com stars acquiring comic book movie fame is growing rapidly, following Black Adam’s casting of Noah Centineo (whose To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before co-star Lana Condor debuted in X-Men: Apocalypse) and Always Be My Maybe’s Randall Park winning over fans of Marvel movies with his Jimmy Woo portrayal. At this rate, I would not be surprised if Joey King of The Kissing Booth fame was next in line.

However, like some other Netflix rom-com stars before her, the 21-year-old Los Angeles native would not actually be making her superhero adaptation debut with a part in the the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You may recall when she played a child prisoner of the Pit eventually identified as a young Talia Al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises. Just a few years later, she appeared on Season 3 of The Flash as Frankie Kane, the magnetic metahuman also known as Magenta.  When Panini's relaunch of their Marvel Collectors' Editions was advertised last month the previewed covers carried the usual £3.50 price. However, now that the comics are published they unfortunately feature a price rise to £3.99. "We must apologise for the price increase", says editor Brady Webb in his intro to The Astonishing Spider-Man Vol.6 No.1. "Due to Brexit and the tumbling value of the pound, our printing costs have risen dramatically and forced us to raise the price". Despite the sudden and unavoidable price rise, the comics are still excellent value for money. Each issue of the Collectors' Editions reprints three (sometimes four) issues of Marvel American comics, which would cost around £10 or more if bought separately. With the Panini titles restarting with new first issues (reprinting Marvel comics from only a year or so ago), this is an ideal time for new or lapsed readers to jump on board.
